How did you get into competition climbing? Why do you compete? (Tumblr Tuesday)

I started to compete about a month after I started climbing.  There was a local comp at my gym and I decided to do it.  It was super small but I had a lot of fun.  The rest of my team competed, so it just seemed natural.

I continue to compete because I love it.  Everyone has something that motivates them in climbing, whether it’s sending outside or just achieving personal goals.  My motivation comes from doing well in competitions :)

2012 Yank N’ Yard

Hi everyone!

So I just got home for the 2012 Yank N’ Yard in New Mexico at Stone Age Climbing Gym, and I had an amazing time!

Qualifiers took place on Friday, with a four problem onsight.  I flashed the first three and completed the fourth problem on my second attempt.  This put me tied for first with Megan Mascarenas.

Finals, which took place on Saturday night, were a 3 problem onsight.  I flashed the first two problems and fell two holds from the top on the last problem.  Megan completed all three problems, putting her in first, and me in second.

This competition was awesome to say the least!  Lance Hadfield did an amazing job setting, he always thinks very out of the box and makes the problems exciting.  I’m very glad that I was able to attend for my second year in a row, and I’m looking forward to it again next year!

Anyway, I’m home for a few days, then off to Los Angeles to shoot for Good Day LA on Thursday morning!

More soon!

How has climbing helped you grow as a person? (Tumblr Tuesday)

Climbing has given me so many opportunities and experiences.  This really made me appreciate hard work and being able to achieve my dreams/goals.

I love coaching, it’s so much fun!

PCI Clinic

Hello everyone!

So it’s time for a blog on the first PCI Clinic I participated in!

It took place on Sunday, October 7 at The Circuit Bouldering Gym SW.  First of all, the gym is awesome!  The free hanging boulder is one of the coolest things that I have ever seen.

We started in the morning at 9 AM with 24 kids broken up into 3 groups.  The 3 main instructors were Alex Johnson, Steven Jeffrey, and myself.  Each of us was helped by Lisa Chulich, Alex, Fritz, or Nina Williams.  Beau Kahler was our awesome photographer for the day!

My station was mental toughness, basically how you react to situations that are not planned or ideal.  I had a lot of fun teaching this with Lisa, we broke into separate groups of 4 and did exercises with the kids that put them into “competition” mode.

The favorite exercise we ran was taping the ratings of boulder problems and having the kids onsight them.  Some of the kids got really psyched out and fell on problems they could warmup on.

After running the kids through all of the stations, we signed some posters, chalk bags, shirts, etc.  It was really fun to help the kids and I cannot wait for the next one!

Well, I’m off to another crazy busy week!

I’ll post more soon!

The Portland Boulder Rally

Hi again everyone!

So I just got home from The Portland Boulder Rally!  This is the second year that this competition has taken place, and it was awesome!

Qualifiers were on Saturday morning, a 3 hour redpoint broken up into session 1 and session 2.  I competed in session 1, from 9 AM-12 PM.  Redpoints are always so much fun because you’re able to get on so many different problems and get to climb with literally everyone!

I gave it my all in the red point, and placed 3rd!  The top 6 made finals, which is always tough to break into.

Finals were run similarly to World Cup Format.  We had 4 problems, with 4 minutes to attempt each.  However, in between attempts we went behind the wall versus waiting in front of the crowd.  Also, the clock did not run out if you were on the wall at 4 minutes.

The problems were crazy hard!  I was unable to complete any of them, but I definitely did my best!  My favorite problem was probably the 3rd one, it had an awesome double toe hook in it and was just all around very fun!

I ended up placing 5th in finals, which I’m extremely excited about!

Tomorrow I’ll put up my blog about the PCI Clinic I taught today (Sunday).

Off to bed!
